Why outdoor fabric is harder work

It is not simply dirtier, it is dirty in a way that resists cleaning, and that distinction is the reason it prices slightly above indoor work.

Indoor soil largely sits in the fabric. It has been deposited there and it can be lifted out. Outdoor soil gets baked in. Months of direct Arizona sun drives it into the fibre and bonds it there, and the longer a cushion has sat untouched the less readily it releases.

That is also why waiting is expensive in a way people do not expect. A cushion cleaned annually comes back looking close to new. The same cushion left for five years has soil that has been through five summers of that process, and the result is good rather than transformative.

What we find on Scottsdale patios

The obvious stuff

Dust, pollen, leaf debris, bird droppings and whatever blows in off the desert. Most of it responds well.

Monsoon aftermath

Cushions that got soaked and then dried slowly, often under a cover, which is the ideal condition for mildew. Treatable in the cover in most cases. If it has grown into the foam insert, that is a cushion replacement rather than a cleaning job, and we will tell you which you have.

Pool chemistry

Splash-out onto nearby cushions leaves chlorinated residue that can lighten fabric over time. Cleaning removes the residue. It does not restore colour that has already been lifted out.

Sunscreen

The one nobody expects. Sunscreen transfers readily onto fabric, it is oily, and it holds dust. On light-coloured cushions around a pool it is frequently the actual cause of the darkening people blame on general dirt.

How outdoor cleaning goes

1. Cushions come off. Everything gets cleaned on both sides where the construction allows, because the underside of a patio cushion is rarely as clean as people assume.
2. Pre-treatment for what is actually there. Mildew, sunscreen and general dust are three different problems and they do not get the same product.
3. Cleaning and extraction. Outdoor fabric generally takes a more robust approach than delicate indoor cloth, which is one of the few places this job is easier.
4. Drying. Air movers where it helps, and in an Arizona summer the weather does most of the work.
5. Back together. Cushions returned to their frames, and a look at it with you before we go.

Frames, not just cushions

Worth mentioning because people ask. The cushions are the upholstery job. The frames, whether aluminium, wrought iron, teak or resin wicker, are a different kind of work and generally a pressure washing or hand-cleaning question rather than an extraction one.

We will tell you plainly what the cushions will and will not change. If the frames are the thing that actually looks bad, cleaning the cushions will not fix your patio and you should know that before booking.

Timing it right

The best time is right after monsoon season, roughly late September into October. Everything that was going to blow onto your patio has done so, the mildew risk has passed, and you are heading into the months when you will actually be using the space.

The second best is early spring, before the season starts, which is what the seasonal properties in Troon and north Scottsdale generally do.

The worst is July, when nobody is outside and the cushions are about to take another two months of storms.

What it costs
