What cleaning actually does to leather
Here is the part most people are never told.
Leather is skin, and it stays supple because of the oils held within it. Cleaning removes soil from the surface, and it removes some of those oils along with it. That is unavoidable and it is not a flaw in the process.
What matters is what happens next. Put the oils back with a conditioner and the hide stays flexible and the piece is better than it was. Leave them out and the leather gradually stiffens, and stiff leather cracks wherever it flexes, which is precisely the seat cushion and the seams.
A cheap leather clean with no conditioning step will make the piece look better this week and shorten its life considerably.
Not all leather behaves the same
Protected or pigmented
The most common by a wide margin and the most forgiving. It has a surface finish that keeps most things from soaking in, so soil sits on top where it can be removed. This is what most sofas in most houses are.
Aniline and semi-aniline
Dyed through rather than surface-finished, which is what gives it that soft natural look and why it costs more. It also means it absorbs readily, including anything applied to it, so it takes a far gentler approach and a great deal more care.
Suede and nubuck
Napped surfaces, entirely different requirements, and not something to approach with a general leather cleaner.

What leather cleaning will and will not fix
It will remove body oil, surface soil and general grime, and restore a good deal of the colour depth that has been dulled by build-up. On a piece that has never been cleaned the difference is usually substantial.
It will not reverse cracking that has already happened, restore colour lost to UV fading, or repair a split. Those are re-dye and repair work, they are a different trade, and we will tell you that rather than let you expect something we cannot deliver.
The honest summary is that leather cleaning is maintenance rather than restoration. Done on schedule it keeps a piece in good condition for a very long time. Done once after fifteen years of neglect, it helps but it does not undo the fifteen years.
Why it matters more in this climate
Arizona is hard on leather in a way that wetter places are not.
Low humidity pulls moisture out of everything, leather included, so it dries out faster here than it would in a milder climate. Add strong sun through large windows and the drying accelerates further.
A leather sofa in a bright Scottsdale living room is losing flexibility faster than the same sofa in Seattle, which is why conditioning is not an optional flourish on furniture out here. It is the thing keeping the piece alive.

The piece is charged at the standard rate, so a leather sofa is $150 and a leather sectional is $350. Conditioning is a per-piece add-on, and it is the one add-on we genuinely argue for rather than mention in passing.
How often
Every 12 to 24 months for most households, same as fabric. Sooner if the piece sits in direct sun or gets heavy daily use.
The advantage of leather is that it tells you when it is due. When the surface starts feeling dry rather than supple, or the colour looks flat rather than deep, that is the point to have it done. Waiting until it cracks is waiting too long, because that part cannot be undone.

Do you clean leather?

Why does leather need conditioning?
Because cleaning removes oils along with the soil, and those oils are what keep the hide flexible. Take them out and leave them out and the leather stiffens, then cracks where it flexes most, which is the seat and the seams.

Can you fix cracking that has already happened?
No. Conditioning keeps flexible leather flexible, it does not reverse cracking that has already occurred. If the surface has split we will tell you that cleaning will make it look better but will not repair it.
What about faded leather?
Fading is UV damage to the colour and cleaning does not restore it. That is a re-dye job and a different trade. We will say so rather than take your money and leave you disappointed.
Is all leather the same?
No, and it matters. Protected or pigmented leather is the most common and the most forgiving. Aniline and semi-aniline absorb readily and need much more care. Suede and nubuck are different again. We identify which you have before starting.
